HP Printer Error 49: Fix 49.XXXX Service Errors
An HP 49 or 49.XXXX message is a firmware-processing/communication error family, not one single failed part. The fastest safe diagnosis is to record the full code, decide whether the error is intermittent or persistent, then see whether the printer can reach Ready with network, USB and other external connections removed.
Photograph or write down every character shown after 49. HP uses variable suffixes such as 49.WX.YZ, and model-specific variants can matter. Do not reduce a specific 49.XXXX message to only “49 error” before troubleshooting.
Verify: You have the printer model, full 49 code, and whether the error clears after one normal power cycle.
Diagnose intermittent vs persistent Error 49
HP's current Enterprise/PageWide guidance explicitly separates 49 errors into intermittent and persistent failures. Intermittent errors appear only part of the time and commonly clear after power cycling. Persistent errors repeatedly return after troubleshooting attempts.
That distinction matters more than guessing a component from the suffix alone. If the printer works again, preserve the evidence around the job or action that triggered the error. If the error repeatedly returns, isolate the printer before changing configuration.
Verify: Classify the failure as intermittent or persistent based on what the printer actually does after restart.
Fix path #1 — boot with external connections removed
For LaserJet Pro 49.XXXX troubleshooting, HP instructs users to turn the printer off, unplug network and/or USB connections, then power it back on and check whether it reaches the Ready state. On supported models, disable wireless printing for this isolation test as well.
If it reaches Ready while isolated, print an internal page such as a configuration report. That proves the printer can operate without the external print path and gives you a cleaner branch to investigate.
Verify: With external connections removed, the printer either reaches Ready and can print an internal page, or the 49 error still appears. Record which result you get.
Fix path #2 — reconnect one path and use a simple test file
If the printer is stable while isolated, reconnect one connection at a time. HP recommends starting with a simple test file and isolating whether the 49 error follows a particular connection type or file.
If Error 49 returns only when LAN or USB is reconnected, stop before reconnecting again. Hold or clear the pending print queue on the computer or print server first, then reconnect the single path and send one known-simple test job. Otherwise, a queued job that triggers the failure can be delivered again immediately and make the printer appear persistently faulty.
Do not reconnect LAN, USB, wireless and every queued job at once. A one-variable-at-a-time test preserves the evidence that tells you whether the trigger is external.
Verify: The printer remains at Ready after the connection is restored with the old queue held or cleared, and one known-simple test file prints successfully. If 49 returns before any job is sent, record that distinction—the connection itself, not a known queued document, becomes the stronger lead.
Fix path #3 — isolate a file or driver trigger
HP documents unsupported printer commands and unusual device interactions as possible causes of 49 errors. If one document reliably triggers the error, test a simpler file first. HP's LaserJet Pro guidance also suggests trying a different supported print driver or saving the source into another file format when a specific file is suspected.
This is especially useful when ordinary internal pages and simple jobs work but one PDF, application output or complex job repeatedly causes the failure.
Verify: Reproduce with the suspect file only after a simple file succeeds. If only the suspect file triggers 49, preserve that file/application/driver combination for escalation.
Fix path #4 — check current HP firmware
HP includes firmware verification/update in its 49.XXXX troubleshooting path. Use HP's support page for the exact printer model and compare the installed firmware with the currently offered version before assuming hardware failure.
Do not interrupt a firmware update, and do not install firmware intended for another model. In managed environments, record the current firmware version and change window first.
Verify: Record the firmware version before and after any supported update, then repeat the same controlled test that previously triggered the error.
When a persistent 49 points toward service
If the printer continues to show Error 49 while isolated from external connections, or HP's model-specific procedure reaches its service step, stop broad software changes. HP's guidance for LaserJet Pro states that a printer that does not return to Ready during the isolated test requires HP support/service; Enterprise guidance likewise treats persistent 49 errors separately from intermittent ones.
Verify: Before service, capture the exact model, full 49 code, firmware version, whether it reaches Ready while isolated, and whether an internal configuration page can print.
What not to do first
Still getting HP Error 49?
Collect a small evidence package before contacting HP or your managed-print provider. It makes a persistent firmware/device problem much easier to distinguish from an external job or connection trigger.
